FEU Needs To Make A Formal Accusation

Accusation, accusal (a formal charge of wrongdoing brought against a person; the act of imputing blame or guilt).

These days, Mark Barroca is in the hotseat. FEU has recently said more or less, that the reason he isn’t playing is either because ‘the team expressed dissatisfaction with his playand / or he ‘gave in to temptation‘. On the other hand, Barroca himself issued a statement detailing how sorry he is about what happened (whatever it is), and how he is moving on (again, from whatever it is).

The problem is, there cannot be any moving on, there cannot be any apologies or acceptance of apologies without primarily explaining what it is he’s accused of having done.

Otherwise, there are two scenarios:

One: Either Barroca has been a victim of mismanagement – because you can’t just kick a player out due to ‘bad play’ or

Two: He’s getting away with murder – because if he sold a game, he has more than FEU or the UAAP to answer to.

But first, a rejoinder

Here is part of FEU Athletic Director Mark Molina’s statement re the situation, from a video by by Rick Olivarez:

He probably won’t play for the FEU Tamaraws anymore. Last time we talked with Mark, we told him.. He will still be a student. He’s scheduled to graduate October 2010, his scholarship will remain until he finishes his studies at FEU. But he has played his last game for FEU.

The team thought they will be no longer successful playing with Mark.

Asked to comment on why: It’s hard to comment on that side, but it was a team decision, and we will live with that decision.

Asked to comment on exactly what happened?: Members of the team expressed dissatisfaction with his play. So we spoke to everyone on the team and then a decision was made that in the best interest of FEU, we will play without Mark.

And here is FEU owner Anton Montinola’s take:

We are all victims of our success. We have to live with that accordingly. The UAAP is very popular, so there are a lot of temptations. We just have to keep advising our players accordingly, but there’s no guarantee this won’t happen again.

Now, here’s Mark Barroca’s ‘statement’, via a text, re this ever growing mysterious situation, from TJ Manotoc’s Blog.

AKO PO AY LUBOS NA NALULUNKOT SAPAGKAT HINDI NA AKO MAKAKAPAGLARO SA FEU AT SA UAAP, GANOON PA MAN, NIRERESPETO KO PA ANG DESISYON NG FEU PARA SA SABI PO NILANG KAPAKANAN NG TEAM AT NG UNIBERSIDAD. What Can We Conclude From Both Statements?

One – SOMETHING AWFUL HAPPENED. That’s fairly obvious, and both parties acknowledge this.

TwoNeither party is admitting to what exactly it is. Almost all of us are quick to conclude that Barroca is being accused of point shaving or selling out a game (or games). However, did you see the word ‘gambling’, ‘threw the game’, ‘benta’, or anything like that in either side’s statements? No.

So Now What?

The process to right a wrong is simple. First, you need to accuse the person whom allegedly performed a crime. Mark is 23 years old, hardly an innocent, and a grown man by now. If he has done wrong, then by all means gather all proof against him and accuse him properly.

Second, Mark will either admit to his crime, or contest it. His ‘official statement’ above reads like an admission, yet at the same time leaves us in the dark. What exactly is he sorry about? Why is he saying sorry in the first place? Did he sell a game? Because if he did, that’s probably illegal, and he’ll need to answer to more than FEU or the UAAP, right? But if he didn’t sell a game and just played badly, did FEU have the right to kick him out?

This is why FEU needs to make a formal accusation. If FEU doesn’t accuse Mark, then he’ll never have the chance to truly atone for his crime. His apology is meaningless, since he is effectively saying sorry for something he does not admit by virtue of avoiding it’s disclosure.

However, if FEU possesses clear proof that Barroca sold out, then by God let’s have it. Otherwise they are actually allowing a crime to have occurred, and people involved in the committing of this crime will get off scott-free.
