I told you once how impressed I was at Chris Tiu’s blog, even referring to it as ‘the best read on the Internet’. He’s delivered today once again, with a recount as to the Smart – Gilas‘ adventures at the recently concluded FIBA-Asia Champions Club held at Jakarta. Some choice cuts:
Maybe before the tournament began, we would be satisfied to clinch 5th spot. But after actually competing against those colossal and experienced national players, 5th place was actually a disappointment for me, personally. I have been advised not to get too hard on myself and the team because we did OK considering we are a young, scrawny and inexperienced team. But here’s the reason why i felt that we could have easily landed in the 3rd or 4th spot.
What was really frustrating for me, was that i was in the bench for the most part of the game. I sat down around halfway through the 3rd quarter and never got the chance to get back in the game. Really disappointing especially since I love 4th quarters! And i usually finish games.
The latter showing some of that usual hurt pride players feel when they’re benched, especially during crucial moments when they feel they should be in the game. Those are searing painful moments when you either suck it up or break down and do a Scottie Pippen.
At any rate, here’s what I’d do if I was Smart, a sponsor of the team:
- Give the guy a nice laptop.
- Give him whatever phone that can connect to that laptop and onto the ‘net.
- Give him an unlimited plan.
Why? SO HE CAN BLOG MORE, that’s why. Finding a guy interested in ball that can actually write is hard enough. Finding a popular basketball player with actual basketball skills and can actually write is G.O.L.D.. Why, in Santa Claus’ name, is this being overlooked I’ve no idea. Gilas is supposed to be some sort of computer literacy NGO, right? Which marketing non – genius is missing how this all fits? The win – win of this for them and us reading public boggles the mind.
Instead, we get these idiot ‘Gusto mo ba maka 1-on-1 si Chris Tiu‘ Fanatxt promos that insult your intelligence. Yes, I know people (ie. girls) still bite into that and they’re probably raking it in, but in the long run I doubt anyone finds real value in receiving canned text messages and besides, this is just woefully inadequate considering how much more you could do.
At any rate, here’s the link again to his blogpost, plus here’s a link to the Pilipinas Basketbol Facebook Page as well, which is a truly better idea imho than a separate website as it’s far more easily updated and easy to follow. They even promote the use of Justin.tv to watch their games and post schedules there (they’re off to Japan for exhibition games), which is worth a post in itself re how traditional media (ie. TV) is having a hard enough time and looks in trouble even more, but that’s for another post.
Got this comment from a ‘JC’
FYI.. FANATXT MESSAGES ARE NOT CANNED
THEY ARE ACTUAL TEXT MESSAGES FROM CHRIS TIU
AND JUST LIKE HIS BLOGHE DO GIVE SOME UPDATES, TEASER AND INSIDE SCOOPS ABOUT HIM
I stand corrected then, thanks.
