PBA BEST-OF-7 AND OTHER TRIVIA

In 6 of the last 9 times and 9 of the last 15 times in a best-of-7
series 2 teams were tied after 4 games - 5 in the Finals and 4 in the
semis - they went on to be decided by a Game 7.

HOW IMPORTANT IS A 3-2 LEAD IN A BEST-OF-7 SERIES AFTER A 2-ALL
SPLIT? Since the best-of-7 series was introduced in the 1982
Reinforced Conference Finals, 25 of 32 teams (or 78%) which won Game 5
after a 2-all tie - 25 of the 32 in the Finals -- went on to win the

Just wanted to give a big shoutout to friend and business associate Neva for firing off Admiralpye Plays, her brand new sports blog featuring an old love of mine, Tennis!

This joins a few other fave sports blogs such as Jaymie's TheBullRunner (excellent domain name btw), which chronicles stuff going in and around local running, mostly 3k, 10k and up to 100k in her case (wow, right?). I was lucky enough to make her acquaintance during a parenting - related event of all things.

In the basketball category, I'd have to give a big thumbs up to inbounbass.com, which has resources to die for, such as top notch images and videos of whatever's going on, including interviews and events plus of course, games themselves.

FEU Is Spelled R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Fernandez I've always liked the FEU team even before the Arwind Santos days. This is a team that really understands the game. Obviously well - coached they seldom ever hang their heads, never dwelling too long on errors or looking like they don't belong - because plainly, they do. Amongst the elite teams in the UAAP, the FEU Tamaraws bring a tough and very high level of game year after year.

As I write this, the FEU players are headed towards their dugout - many of them with tears and their eyes. At the start of Season 71, I mentioned how I didn't even know who they were. Today, I will never forget the names JR Cawaling, Benedict Fernandez, Mark Barroca, Robert Kave, Marlon Adolfo etc., because they played with a level of intensity I HAVE NEVER SEEN SINCE I CAN'T REMEMBER ANYMORE. Forget the NBA Finals, the UE vs. FEU game that ended a few minutes ago brought me near tears myself. It is quite plainly, the closest thing to a perfect game I've seen in years.

Of course it's one thing to say that, and quite another to show stats to prove it, but unfortunately since those are still to be published in the papers tomorrow, I'm only relying on memory when I say that at one point, UE was shooting 50% and FEU an astounding 70% field goal percentage. Not only were offenses clicking, but defense was terrific as well, which is amazing for any one team, but BOTH TEAMS? AT THE SAME TIME? That is just incredible.

Thoughts On DLSU vs. UP; FEU vs. UE

Our Basketball Viewing Options Today, 26 July 2008, Involve the ff.

UP vs. DLSU

- I just wanna say a few words about UP. ABS occasionally show teasers after games with lots of flashing lights and way too much pumped up music, featuring different teams one by one with lots of interviews of coaches and players. Anyway, they got to the UP part and I was almost falling asleep, but then Woody Co said a few very insightful things. Being a Chinoy, he is very honest (Chinoys usually are, imho, quite open with whatever's on their minds), and he said that last year, there were times when he just wanted to stop playing (in the middle of a game), pack up and go home.

He then went ahead and talked about how he sees himself not doing that anymore, being older, and part of the seniors of the team now whom the rooks and coaching staff will be looking at for support. Of course he needs to say that, being a puff piece, but it sounded to me like a boy turning into a man, and was worth hearing nonetheless.

Baracael Shot. Critical But Stable.

MAGNOLIA, PBA PRO STATS WIN AS 17th JAPA CAGE CUP FIRES OFF

Defending champion Magnolia All-Stars and 2003 titlist Pro Stats won
their respective matches against separate opponents yesterday at the
start of the PBA Press Corps-organized 17th Annual Raffy Japa Cup
basketball tournament at the Cuneta Astrodome.

The PBA statisticians, on the other hand, scored a come-from-behind
73-71 win over the Coca-Cola All-Stars behind a 40-point effort from
import Vergel Meneses.

The Beverage Masters, led by the 31 and 30 points, respectively, from
Gani Malindog and Boris Aldeguer, had an easy 109-94 win over the Talk
'N Text All-Stars in a game where Magnolia led from start to finish
despite playing with just five players.

With Malindog scoring 13 of his points in the second quarter, Magnolia
outscored Talk 'N Text 37-22 in the period en route to a 59-39
halftime lead from which the Beverage Masters never looked back.

Trailing by as much as 11 points at the half and for more than three
fourths of the game, Meneses combined with Bogz Marcial and Zaldy
Trinidad in the second half where Pro Stats outscored Coca-Cola 42-29.

Magnolia Beverage Masters vs. Coca Cola Tigers

Game 3 of a best-of-3 quarterfinal; series is tied 1-1.

Winner of this series advances to a best-of-7 semifinal against elims topnotcher Air21.

Magnolia and Coca-Cola are 2 of 3 teams which went 0-2 in the elims against the Express, the other team being Welcoat.

The Beverage Masters lost their 2 games against Air21 by an average margin of only 4.0 pts. compared to the Tigers' 12.5.

Game 2 recap:

Best Player of the Game - Alex Cabagnot 17 pts, 3/6 3pts, 3 rebs, 3 asts, 1 stl, 1 blk.

Cabagnot had 11 of his pts. in the 4th qtr., 9 of them coming from beyond the arc.

However it was rookie Ronjay Buenafe who scored the game-winning basket with 7.2 ticks left in the game.

Magnolia still had enough time to win the game but Dondon Hontiveros missed a triple at the buzzer in the game that went through a deadlock and 4 lead changes in the 4th qtr. alone.

It was a great escape for the Tigers who squandered leads of as much as 12 in the 3rd qtr.

3 others scored in double figures for Coca-Cola led by Jason Dixon who finished with 16 after a personal conference-low 6 in Game 1 but the Tigers' other import Brandon Dean continued to struggle, tallying only 6.

Amal McCaskill led Magnolia with his 19 pts. which came with 16 rebs. while 3 other Beverage Masters scored in double figures led by Hontiveros' 18 in the game where both teams combined for 21 triples.

The win enabled Coca-Cola to stay alive in its quest for a 1st Final Four appearance under head coach Binky Favis, who is in his 3rd season and 6th conference with the Tigers.

Coca-Cola has not been to the semifinals of any conference since the inaugural Fiesta Conference in 2004 when the team was still under Chot Reyes and Favis was still an assistant coach at Barangay Ginebra.

The last time Coca-Cola won a best-of-3 series after losing Game 1, the Tigers went on to win the championship (which happened in the 2003 Reinforced Conference quarterfinals against Red Bull).

Coke is also now 3-1 in do-or-die games this season, its only loss to Alaska in Game 2 of their best-of-3 quarterfinal in the Philippine Cup where the Tigers were swept by the Aces.

The other quarterfinal pairing in the previous Philippine Cup curiously also had Magnolia being swept by Red Bull.

Despite the Game 2 loss, Magnolia is still a win away from a 2nd straight semifinal appearance in the Fiesta Conference.

The Beverage Masters were eliminated in 6 games by eventual champion Alaska in last season's Fiesta Conference Final Four.

The SMC franchise is also eyeing 6th semis stint in the last 8 conferences and 18th in the last 22 conferences dating back to the 1999 Commissioner's Cup.

Magnolia's only 4 semifinal absences in the last 21 conferences were in the 2003 All-Filipino Cup, in the 2004 Fiesta Conference, in the '05-'06 Fiesta Conference where their streak of having advanced past the elimination round 24 straight times was put to an end by Air21 in the wildcard phase of the elims and in this season's Philippine Cup.

Prior to that '05-'06 Fiesta Conference, the Beverage Masters had always advanced past the elimination round of a conference dating back to the 1996 Commissioner's Cup.

Also despite the Game 2, Magnolia is still a respectable 4-2 since McCaskill replaced Jameel Watkins, its only other loss to Air21 90-88 last June 25.

The Beverage Masters were 7-7 with Watkins.

The SMC franchise has never lost a best-of-3 series after winning Game 1, sweeping Sta. Lucia and Alaska in the 2004-05 Philippine Cup wildcard and quarterfinals, respectively and FedEx in the 2003 Reinforced Conference quarterfinals.

Coca-Cola is looking to win back-to-back games for the 1st time in its last 8 games dating back to the elims, or since beating Red Bull (102-80) last May 23 and Welcoat (94-87) last May 30.

Best Player of the Game - Lordy Tugade 20 pts, 2/5 3pts, 15 rebs (career-high), 1 ast, 1 stl.

Tugade had 10 of his pts. in the 4th qtr. where the Beverage Masters outscored the Tigers 32-24 after taking a precarious 76-72 lead after 3 qtrs. of play.

The Alaminos Assassin also had 5 pts. in a 13-0 run by Magnolia in the 1st period which enabled his team to take the lead for good, from a 6-9 deficit in the 1st 3 and a half mins. of the game.

The Beverage Masters shot 51% from the field and outscored Coke 21-9 from the 15-foot line in the game where they led by as much as 17 in the 4th period.

Magnolia also won the game despite missing the services of leading local scorer Danny Seigle who rested a mild quadriceps strain.

Magnolia import Amal McCaskill matched Tugade's scoring effort while also finishing with a double-double with his 11 rebs. which he added with 3 asts, a steal and a block.

Defense also played a key role for the Beverage Masters who held Coke imports Jason Dixon to a personal conference-low 6 pts. on a 3-for-8 shooting and new small import Brandon Dean to just 8 on a 3-for-11 shooting from the field.

The Tigers were led by the 20 pts., 12 rebs. and 3 asts. of Asi Taulava and the 17 of Nic Belasco who added 9 rebs. but both players combined for just 4 pts. in the 4th qtr.

Coca-Cola and Magnolia made it to this best-of-3 quarterfinal outright by finishing 4th and 5th respectively in the eliminations.

Both teams actually ended up tied for 3rd with Barangay Ginebra with their identical 10-8 records the Kings took the No. 3 ranking because of a better quotient and the Beverage Masters having the worst quotient.

Magnolia had identical 5-4 records in the 1st and 2nd rounds of the elims.

Coke also only had a 4-5 record in the 2nd round of the elims compared to 6-3 in the 1st.

Both teams are meeting in the playoffs for the 1st time since the 2005-06 Fiesta Conference survivor playoffs with the then 8th-seeded San Miguel Beermen had the twice-to-beat advantage against the 9th-seed Coca-Cola Tigers.

The Tigers forged sudden death with an 85-82 OT win but the Beermen eliminated Coke with a 69-67 decision in their next game to advance to a best-of-3 wildcard series against Air21.

Both teams are meeting in a best-of-3 series for the 1st time since the 2002 All-Filipino Cup semifinals which the Tigers, then coached by Chot Reyes, won in 3 games en route to winning the title.

For Magnolia, this is its 8th best-of-3 since the 2002 All-Filipino Cup and has won 4 of its last 6, 3 of them via 2-0 sweeps.

Magnolia was the Fiesta Conference champion in 2005.

In the Fiesta Conference, the Tigers' best finish was 4th in the inaugural staging of the tournament in 2004 (which still had a different format).

Since the 2004-05 Philippine Cup where this type of conference format was institutionalized, Coca-Cola has not won more than 8 games in the elims.

The Tigers are in their best showing since winning 11 of their 1st 12 games in the 2003 Reinforced Conference (which they went on to win) when the team had eventual Best Import Tee McClary in their fold and was still under Chot Reyes.

That 2003 Reinforced Conference was Coke's last taste of a championship and a Finals appearance.

In last season's Fiesta Conference, San Miguel Beer and Coca-Cola finished 6th and 7th respectively after the elims with their 10-8 and 7-11 slates respectively and were relegated to the wildcard phase where they eventually collided against each other in a sudden-death game for the 4th and last quarterfinal berth at stake.

San Miguel Beer eliminated Coca-Cola 102-101, incredibly pulling off the win despite being down by 4 pts. with 13.3 seconds left in the game.

The 2003 league MVP had 5 pts, in a 25-9 run by the Tigers at the start of the 4th period which blew the game wide open.

Taulava's efforts enabled him to be named co-Player of the Week by the PBA Press Corps for the period May 5-11 alongside Welcoat's Rob Wainwright.

Then Coke import Gee Gervin actually led the Tigers with his 35 pts built around a 6-for-10 shooting from 3pt range and added 5 rebs, 4 asts and 1 stl.
