MJ Sells Just 23 Really Special Shoes

There are two ways to approach a P14,995.00 (SRP) basketball shoe. First is to just admit that, no matter what shoe you wear, if you don’t bring game then you could buy ten of these and you’re not gonna get any better. And for all those who think that they can finally dunk when they buy an MJ shoe? Take it from me. I tried it, and no senor. So if I were you and you harbor thoughts like these, why not check out some of Nike’s other offerings? You might find one that’d suit your budget better.

Then there’s the 2nd way, which is to realize that there will be only 1,000 of these babies worldwide, and only 23 will be available in the Philippines. Not only that, this is the 23rd Jumpman by Da Great One himself, number 23. That means this is a commemoration of the career of the recognized greatest player in basketball history, a guy whose exploits my generation feels lucky to have observed ‘firsthand’ (which is to say, we watched him ‘live’ on tv), has singlehandedly made the sport almost as popular as soccer, and made thousands – no – millions of fathers name their kids Michael (or Michelle or MJ I guess, if they’re a girl).

Now suddenly, P14,995.00 seems like a bargain! Interested now huh. Here’s a closer look.

And here are important facts to remember:

  • AIR JORDAN XX3 PREMIER – this is the model for ‘exclusive limited release’ with only 1,000 units in the world and 23 in the Philippines.
  • Jan. 26, 2008 – is the date it’s going to be released exclusively at Nike Park The Fort.
  • Nike Park The Fort – that’s Nike Philippine’s Flagship store in Fort Bonifacio, a poshy shopping place called ‘Serendra’. Beside Market Market, Taguig.
  • AIR JORDAN XX3 – is the ‘regular’ model if you can call it that, and probably what we’ll be able to buy if we’re not lucky enough to have the moolah or patience to wrestle 22 other guys for the PREMIER model. This will be launched Feb. 23., 2008. It features a ‘unique design cue’ like “the imprint of Michael Jordan’s fingerprint serving as the traction pattern on the outsole and his thumbprint on the back of the tongue lining“. Wowww.
  • Feb. 16, 2008 – There will be an ‘All Star Release’ again at Nike Park The Fort and this one goes for P10,495.00.
  • Feb. 23, 2008 – Nationwide release, with the SRP at P9,495.00.
  • The Environment – Aside from it being all I described above, designer Tinker Hatfield, Nike’s Vice President of Innovation Design and Special Projects also made “details in the development and design of the shoe seek to reduce waste and allow for the use of environmentally preferred materials wherever possible-all without compromising athletic performance.” So you not only get to wear a spectacular, landmark shoe but you also save the environment.
  • Jordan Brand – A division of NIKE, Inc., makes sporty apparel inspired by Da Man. Started way back in 1997. Check Jumpman23.com for details.
  • 1985 – Year the first AIR JORDANs were made, during Jordan’s rookie basketball season. Has become the industry’s best selling basketball shoe.
  • Ebay – hehe. Not really an important fact. Just added it to think maybe that’s where I’d go after getting one of the 23 🙂

Here are the instructions on how they’re gonna give out those 23 pieces:

JORDAN BRAND LAUNCHES THE AIR JORDAN XX3: CELEBRATING 23 YEARS OF A LEGACY

AIR JORDAN XX3 Becomes First High-Performance Basketball Shoe in the History of NIKE, Inc. Designed With the Environment in Mind

BEAVERTON, OR (January 8, 2008) – Today, Jordan Brand, a division of NIKE, Inc., announced the launch of the long-awaited, 23rd iteration of the world’s most respected and innovative basketball shoe franchise, the AIR JORDAN XX3. The AIR JORDAN XX3 celebrates 23 years of a legacy started by the most revered basketball athlete in history…Michael Jordan.

“The AIR JORDAN XX3 is deeply meaningful to me, as a celebration of both my life and career. The number 23 is obviously of great significance to me and the release of the XX3 is a pinnacle moment in the Brand’s history,” said Michael Jordan. “I’m honored and humbled by the AIR JORDAN franchise’s loyal following after all these years. The release of this shoe is exciting and a dream come true for me.”

Michael Jordan and legendary shoe designer, Tinker Hatfield, Nike’s Vice President of Innovation Design & Special Projects collaborated on the innovative design behind the handcrafted AIR JORDAN XX3 and in the process created the first basketball shoe in Nike history to embrace the Nike Considered design ethos, where details in the development and design of the shoe seek to reduce waste and allow for the use of environmentally preferred materials wherever possible-all without compromising athletic performance.

“Our goal was to make the AIR JORDAN XX3 the best basketball shoe ever, both in performance and sustainability. The handcraftsmanship and innovation built into this shoe is simply unmatched,” said Hatfield. “By infusing the ultimate in technology, setting a new trend in style and designing a shoe with the environment in mind, we hope these ingredients will cause people to say this is one of their favorite AIR JORDAN’s ever.”

The first AIR JORDAN was released in 1985 to great acclaim during Michael Jordan’s rookie basketball season and instantly became the industry’s best selling basketball shoe. Over the next 22 years, the AIR JORDAN has been one of the world’s most recognizable franchises known for its signature Jumpman logo, innovative technology in basketball and forward thinking fashion.

Unique design cues such as the imprint of Michael Jordan’s fingerprint serving as the traction pattern on the outsole and his thumbprint on the back of the tongue lining bring to life the man that makes the franchise so special.

“For twenty-two years, the Jordan Brand has set the standard for athletic luxury and the AIR JORDAN XX3 is no different,” explains Howard White, Vice President, Jordan Brand. “We at Jordan Brand continue to push the envelope by incorporating unique design cues created by the most talented people in the footwear industry while in turn providing our fans with the best basketball shoe inspired by the best basketball player ever.
