IRON MAN OF BASKETBALL!

Friday, April 27th, 2007

apr232007_alvin_patrimonio.jpgAlvin Patrimonio can lay claim as the most durable local until his retirement from the cage scene in 2005. He played 596 straight games (spanning 12 years) for Purefoods, capturing MVP after MVP and winning several titles for the Ayala and SMC franchise. He was unable to play in game 597 due to an injury. Although his record is mind-boggling, it is peanuts compared to what Ron Boone has achieved in his storied 13-year career in basketball.

Who is the PBA’s most improved player?

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

apr232007_pj_simon.jpgWhat do Carlo Sharma, Denver Lopez, Gary David, PJ Simon have in common? Well, all of them are in the running for the yearend most improved player plum. It’s not simply a jump in scoring, rebounding or in any statistical average. The award is given to a player who has made the most improvement in terms of overall game and has contributed to his team’s success the current season.

apr232007_denver_lopez.jpgLast year, it was Marc Pingris (2005-06 PBA Philippine Cup finals MVP and 2005-06 Defensive Player of the Year) who won the award. Pingris saw his averages in points, rebounds and block shots jump from 4.63ppg, 3.1rppg, 0.38bpg to 8.9ppg, 8.5rpg, 1.63bpg. More importantly, he played a pivotal part in the Giants’ two finals stint in the 2005-06 season. This year, Sharma, Lopez, Baguio, David and PJ Simon have equal chances of winning the same award. Denver Lopez went from a draft bust (a highly-hyped rookie out of Colorado) to a starter at the point for the Welcoat Dragons.

JOKE TIME – WARNING TO ALL PBA PLAYERS!

Monday, April 23rd, 2007

Disclaimer: The characters described herein do not in any way represent active, non-active or deceased players. The article is intended merely as a joke.

Three PBA players died and went to Heaven. Upon their arrival, St. Peter asked each one of them if they have been faithful to their wives. The first PBA player, a known playboy and a womanizer confessed that he had had three affairs after marriage and was sorry he committed them. St. Peter gave him a Volkswagen to drive in Heaven. The second PBA player, a silent but sleek operator, admitted to having one but brief love affair but was likewise sorry he committed them. St. Peter rewarded him with a sports car. The third PBA player who had been known for his sportsmanship and clean plays told St. Peter he was very honest to her wife and loved her until the moment of his death. An obviously delighted St. Peter gave him a luxury car, a Cadillac, as a reward for his faithfulness and honesty.

Top ten reasons for San Miguel’s early skid

Saturday, April 14th, 2007
  1. No Danny Seigle and no Dondon Hontiveros equals disaster.
  2. No Lordy Tugade equals double disaster.
  3. No Chot Reyes equals triple disaster.
  4. It’s the curse (and luck) of new head coach Siot Tanquincen. Remember when coach Siot joined Ginebra in 2004? The Gin Kings lost their first few games but made a timely recovery en route to winning the 2004 PBA Fiesta Cup. They’re hoping the same scenario will play out for them this conference.
  5. They still couldn’t figure out how they lost to the Gin Kings in the Philippine Cup. Their confidence is currently at an all-time low!

Who got the better end of the deal? Grading the Cabagnot, Duremdez, Calimag-Miranda, Ramos trade

Thursday, April 12th, 2007

Coca Cola Tigers: Alex Cabagnot and Ricky Calimag
Sta. Lucia Realtors: Kenneth Duremdes, Manny Ramos and Denok Miranda and a 1998 second round pick

apr112007_stalucia_coke_deal1.jpg

This was an obvious salary dump for the Realtors. Duremdes, 33, is no spring chicken and owns a fat contract equivalent to what a quarter of the team receives. The 2003 draft day deal that landed the Realtors one of the greatest players of all time can be considered as one of the best and worst deals of all time.
