Pingris signs 2-year extension with the Giants!

Friday, January 26th, 2007

Marc PingrisPurefoods high-energy forward Jean Marc Pingris signed a two-year contract extension worth an estimated PHP 10.8 million that will keep him in a Giants' uniform until June 2009. Pingris, the 2005-06 PBA Most Improved Player, will earn at least P300,000 per month although terms were not disclosed. "What he’ll get is close to what he’s been getting," said the source, who requested not to be named.

The Pozorrubio, Pangasinan native hardly played in the team's quarterfinal match up with Talk N Text Phonepals after suffering a broken nose and a left ankle injury. In Game 1, he exploded for 19 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Giants to a pulsating 87-84 win. With injuries hounding him in Game 2 and Game 3, Pingris was never a factor, and as result, the Giants lost the series to the Phonepals 1-3. In 21 games this season with the Giants, he averaged 8.57 ppg, 3.14 rpg and 1.48 bpg.

Pingris was the third overall pick in the PBA 2004 Draft by FedEx (now know as Air21 Express). After playing one forgettable season with the Express where he averaged 4.63 ppg and 3.1 rpg, he was traded to the Giants along with Egay Billones for the Giants' future first round pick. He quickly made an impact to the Giant's roster in the 2005-06 and helped the team advanced to a two finals stint, posting career-highs of 8.9 ppg, 8.5 rpg and 1.63 bpg, the latter earning him the title of "Tapal King" in the PBA. In the 2005-06 Philippine Cup finals, he was named Finals MVP.

PBA Stadium to rise at Mall of Asia?

Friday, January 26th, 2007

Don't look now but planned PBA stadium could be built near SM Mall of Asia. Henry Sy, owner of mall chain SM department stores has reportedly offered a vast vacant lot in the reclaimed area beside the sprawling SM Mall of Asia along Roxas Boulevard.

The Philippine Basketball Association is also looking at a vacant lot beside the Manila Seedling Bank at the corner of EDSA and Quezon Avenue in Quezon City, and an area within the ultra modern Global City in Fort Bonifacio in Taguig.

Purefoods Chunkee Giants: What went wrong?

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

The Talk N Text Phonepals have given erstwhile defending champion Purefoods Chunkee Giants the pink slip in the 2006-07 PBA Talk N Text Philippine Cup. Without forward Marc Pingris in Game 3 and Game 4 (also without Noy Castillo) of the best-of-five quarterfinals showdown, the Chunkee Giants were no match to the powerful frontline of the Talk N Text Phonepals.

[Blast from the past] The very first PBA games

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

This was taken from an old publication. You want some piece of history? Here it is, an account of the very first PBA games.

April 9, 1975, Wednesday. 18,000 fans trooped to the Araneta Coliseum. The opening night of the PBA saw the Toyota Comets nipping the Universal Textile Weavers 105-101 and the Mariwasa-Noritake quintet edging the Concepcion Carriers 101-98.

[PBA Trivia] Walker, Jones and Oliver were the very first PBA imports

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

Did you know that the first foreign players to have set foot on the PBA hardcourt were Cisco Oliver of Noritake, Byron "Snake" Jones of Toyota, and Charles Walker of Universal Textiles (Utex) Wranglers. The goateed Jones, famous for his snake-like moves inside the paint, almost led the Toyota Comets to a grand slam feat in the league's inaugural season. He also played for Crispa, Utex and Honda. Oliver was a 6'6" hulk who played 5 years in the PBA (lasting up to 1979) for Utex, Great Taste, and Carrier/Fiberlite. The 6'6" Walker did not make quite a splash in his PBA stint but did led the Weavers to a semifinals stint in his only season.

[Top Ten] Reasons Why Purefoods Failed To Defend The All-Filipino Crown

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

10) James Yap failed to get a good night kiss from Kris Aquino

9) The Giants have lost their championship hunger

8) Hindi na buo ang loob ng mga Chunkee Giant players

7) James Yap lost his lucky charm. Comish Eala promised to return it but never did. He is reportedly holding it for SBP.

6) The Talk N Text Phonepals were the hungrier team

5) There was a wild rumor that Kerby “The Kid” Raymundo had a standing offer from the Minnesota Timberwolves to be with his idol Kevin “The Kid” Garnett so he played it safe in the quarters to avoid possible injury. Raymundo reportedly changed his mind after Garnett punched him in the face during practice. Garnett will face lifetime ban for his actions.

4) Yancy de Ocampo was supposed to go to the Purefoods Chunkee Giants but management wouldn’t part with Arnold Gamboa, Chris Cantonjos and a strand of hair from a Tikbalang Alvin Patrimonio reportedly got when he was climbing the mountains of the Abazukeh (what?)

3) Asi Taulava drank a newly-patented energy drink that brings incredible powers to one who drinks it. It is the same energy drink Superman drinks during his forays against the evil warlords. The Chunkee Giants simply had no answer to the Rock!

2) Ryan Gregorio reportedly was fuming mad when he learned that Ballex made fun of his picture appearing alongside Jose Rizal. He has entertained notions of suing the developers of this site because of this defamation. Ryan Gregorio has been visibly distracted and will likely resign by the end of the year. He will be replaced by assistant coach Koy Banal. Gregorio is said to be joining showbizness and act as a love triangle between real-life sweethearts Judy Ann Santos and Ryan Agoncillo.

1) The Giants reportedly made a deal when the offer reached PHP 300,000.00. What? There were still four higher amounts left. I said, NO DEAL!
