Purefoods Chunkee Giants Win It All!

Congratulations to the Purefoods Chunkee Giants for winning the most prestigious basketball title in the nation, the All-Filipino (Philippine) Cup!
Despite losing in the Finals of the import-laden Fiesta Conference to Red Bull, the Giants showed that they are the best Filipino team just a few hours ago by defeating Red Bull, 90-83, wrapping up the series at 4 games to 2.
What's great about this victory is that Purefoods managed to claw back from a 1-3 series deficit in the semifinals against Alaska. They also lost two key players in the elimination round, Jondan Salvador and Eugene Tejada, with the latter suffering a career-threatening injury.
Jean Marc Pingris, a virtual nobody last season to PBA fans with just a passing interest, was judged as the Finals MVP. Pingris swatted balls, hauled down the caroms, and dunked the ball just like how NBA player would do -- you just have to see it to believe it. Pingris got more than adequate help from PBA superstars James Yap and Kerby Raymundo. And yes, Jun Limpot finally got his first championship after 13 long years!
I'll cast the spotlight on some of these players in the following days' entries. If you failed to watch the league this season (even at the Finals level), then do so next season! Take it from me -- the PBA is far from boring, with teams like Purefoods and Red Bull that can rock the boards, pile up the points, and push the ball upcourt mercilessly. I lost interest in the PBA a few years back because of the sluggish pace of play, but the Commish (along with ABC-5) has certainly ratcheted up the game's excitement and the fans' attention!
