NCAA: Into the second round

Sunday, July 30th, 2006

The San Beda Red Lions and the Mapua Tech Cardinals wrapped up their first round campaign on a high note as they beat their respective opponents the Letran Knights and the JRU Heavy Bombers two days ago. The win put the Red Lions on top of the standings with a 6-1 card while Mapua settled in fourth with 4-3. Letran and JRU have opposite records with the Knights having a 6-1 standing and JRU, 1-6. Letran slides down to second place, by the virtue of win over the other, because of identical standings with San Beda. PCU is in third place (5-2) followed by Mapua Tech, San Sebastian (3-4), Perpetual Help (2-5), JRU, and this year's host CSB (1-6).

The College of St. Benilde Blazers have had tough times in recent years, after their last NCAA finals appearance in 2002. The Blazers have been constantly rebuilding and retooling their lineup, with coaching changes here and there. Come Season 82, the Blazers succumbed against a veteran Letran team in the first game of the tournament. However, they prevented a losing streak to greet them after their second game as the Blazers struck hard against the Perpetual Help Altas, 79-76, with Martin Urra leading the way with 20 plus points. But that became the only bright light in their first round campaign. The rest of the league just went past them. (more...)

Red and Blue: Lions against Knights

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

The much awaited match between the top two schools in the NCAA will clash on Friday. Knights against Lions; Blue vs. Red; Muralla vs. Mendiola; (like La Salle and Ateneo) former exclusive school against former exclusive school; and the best part of it all, it's #1 vs. #2.

When I looked at the schedule before the start of the season, I was surprised to see the San Beda-Letran game takes place on the last day of the first round, and as the main event. A friend of mine told me that it might be a marketing move of College of St. Benilde, host school for Season 82, because this is the time for the NCAA to bank on a big disadvantage the UAAP is having since DLSU is suspended on the current season. I guess it was just mere coincidence after all. I mean, here you have two schools with very supportive communities getting together on what might be a preview of the NCAA Season 82 basketball finals. What added to a big coincidence is the fact that these two teams sport the #1 and #2 spots in the standings. Another coincidence is that both schools' locations have names that start and end with the letters M and A, but after all, that is no biggie.

Where the bodies are buried

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

Only the occasional Phil Jackson critic emerges in Los Angeles these days. For the most part, though, Jackson feels nothing but love in his second stint as coach of the Lakers. His "Zen Master" persona has proven to be a nice fit for the Southern California mind-set. However, not everyone enjoys Jackson's unique approach. In particular, many Bulls staff members who had to endure his personality quirks were left harboring a long-burning resentment after he departed from Chicago. Jackson’s battles with team vice president Jerry Krause spilled over into an ugly display in 1998, but he also had many less-public clashes with the team’s community services, marketing, and media relations departments. To many of these people, his mind games seemed unnecessary and sometimes cruel.

Where the bodies are buried

This excerpt is taken from the book Mindgames: Phil Jackson's Long Strange Journey (McGraw-Hill), written by Roland Lazenby.

Channing Frye & Andre Igoudala Interview

Friday, July 21st, 2006

I had a chance to interview 'the other' A.I. and New York Knick Channing Frye last Wednesday at a Holiday Inn PressCon. It was supposed to be an exclusive for PDI (where I write for), but it didn't turn out that way. All of us press were herded into a room where we had to elbow each other to interview them (and yes Chip along with your fave Quinito Henson, who was very nice btw :),.

Ok it wasn't that bad, but from a promised exclusive to a room full of jostling journalists it was very different from what I envisioned.

Here are some pics (sorry about my cheap phone cam):

College Hoops Blitzers

Tuesday, July 11th, 2006

The country's two premier collegiate basketball leagues have kicked off, and we've got some quick thoughts on what's going on.

  • First off, the NCAA. A few games into the season, I've got my choice for the team to beat -- the San Beda Red Lions. If you're a PCU or Letran fan, then you can ease down "team to beat" into "team to watch", but there's no taking away the potency of the Lions.

Their 6'8'' Nigerian enforcer Samuel Ekwe is a real gem, consistently putting in at least 10 points and 10 rebounds in his games. Those numbers might just be decent in the pros, but they are impressive in amateur hoops. If Ekwe continues to play like this, he might just lead the Lions to their long-awaited return to the NCAA Finals.

  • Turning our attention to the UAAP, the victorious debut of the UE Red Warriors confirmed the beliefs of many collegiate basketball experts -- they are this year's favorites to win the crown. (more...)

    Pierce and Iverson - together?
The Truth. The Answer. The Celtics.

Paul Pierce, who made Boston fans start to dream again. Allen Iverson, who almost made you forget about Charles Barkley and Dr. J. Playing together outside of the All-Star game.

Both are incredibly talented. Both have big egos. Both can dominate a game at any given time. Both need the ball to be effective. Both have phenomenal court vision. One takes shortcuts on defense, the other takes too many chances.

And for these two players, it might be the last chance for them to make their dreams of an NBA championship come true. (more...)

New UAAP 69 / DLSU Polls!

    Sunday, July 9th, 2006

The UAAP President wants people to forget about it, but we can't!

And so we have new polls asking what everybody (admit it) really wants to know!

Will the UAAP '69 Men's Basketball winning team deserve to be called Champions, even if they don't play DLSU?

    Discuss it here!

NBA’s early birds are the high-rollers

    Saturday, July 8th, 2006

Since the day of the NBA draft last June, two teams have been making waves and have caught the league off-guard with their surprising deals. One is called the Windy City while the other was devastated by the floods and the winds of hurricane "Katrina" (pardon to bring back the memories). One had someone wearing #23 who was later on known to be the greatest who has ever played the game while the other had a #23 who was later known to struck a nerve in Byron Scott's head.

Enough of the dally dally dill dill...

Ben Wallace Leaves Pistons for the Bulls

    Wednesday, July 5th, 2006

    What a shocker.

The Detroit Pistons suddenly find themselves without a heart, and the Chicago Bulls now have a foundation for a title-contending team. You can find the details on this good news article. As for me, I'm left to ruminate on the effects this massive movement will have on the Eastern Conference.

    Three New UAAP Coaches

    Wednesday, July 5th, 2006

The 69th Season of the UAAP is set to begin this Saturday, and fans will be introduced to three new faces at the teams' benches. Actually, only two new faces, as the third one is a comebacking coach out to regain past glory.

He's none other than Joe Lipa of the UP Fighting Maroons, who steered the squad to their first and only basketball crown exactly two decades ago. Could this be the year that the venerable Lipa brings lost glory to the State U?

It’s Purefoods vs. Red Bull, Part Deux

    Monday, July 3rd, 2006

"Knockout Sunday" is finally over. Pacquiao has dispatched Larios, and the Chunkee Giants and Barako have followed suit, defeating their rivals in riveting matches to advance to the PBA Finals.

The Purefoods cagers escaped with the skin of their teeth as they held off the Alaska Aces, 90-89, to complete an astounding comeback from a 3-1 series deficit. The Giants won the last three games of the series in close fashion. A PBA article describes the situation quite nicely:

It was a painful loss for Tim Cone, who had the Finals within his reach after the Aces took 2-0 and 3-1 leads in the series.
